Cuando Un Amigo Se Va

My mobile phone rang as I was entering the lobby of the Embassy Suites at Salt Lake City Utah to meet with Erik Dasque for dinner. It was my wife Maria calling me from home in Texas to tell me that there was a man in US Army uniform ringing our door bell. I asked her if he was in Battle Dress Uniform (BDUs) or if he was wearing his 'Class A's (dress uniform).

She said he was in dress uniform.

Francisco Gregorio Martínez was killed in action in Iraq during a patrol operation around 2:00 PM Bagdad time (GMT +3) on March 20, 2005.

Perhaps because you have made your love for your son so obvious in your occaisional postings about him. I saw the Monologue blog yesterday, and when I got home from work, I cried. And of course, my sadness can not compare to the greif and pain you and your family feels now.

Mr. Martinez, I do not have the words to express my condolences to you and your family. Your son was a fine example of what allows our country to endure and continue. May his memory always shine bright for all.

He has carried on a tradition with his service to our nation. He was a member of the 9th Infantry Regiment, whose motto is "Keep up the Fire!"

This motto was stated by Colonel Emerson H. Liscum as he directed the attack on the city walls in Tiensten, China while holding the unit colors until he was mortally wounded. His last words to his men were "Keep Up The Fire!"

The tradition of keeping up the fire continues to this day.

To the Mother, Father, and Fiance of Francisco Gregorio Martinez: I pray you find solace in the arms of Our Lord. I know no other way. I am so sorry, but it was not for nothing. I just want you to know that.

I know it isn't fair, but who am I to ask of God what is? I guess I just don't have any of the right words, if there are any, so I will just, "God bless, keep, and love you."

I dont know what i have to say.
I am a german, love your country and think the war was necessary.

But the way after the war was a deep mismanagement
of some of the military strategiests.

The bad experience had ever the normal people like us. I wish that you(we) see Paco in heaven.

My condolences to you and your family

Sir;
As the son of a US Marine, I know that words really don't seem to mean much at a time like this, but I would like to express my sincerest condolences to you for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. The loss of one good and honorable soldier diminishes us all, but his memory and his spirit can live on in those whose lives he touched. Every time I hear of another loss, I feel humbled, that these incredible people are putting their lives on the line for my freedom. Please know that your family is in my prayers, and I will continue to lift you up and to pray for comfort for you and your family and friends.

I am deeply moved with sorrow by your loss of Paquito, as I have been for all the families of our brave men and women citizens who have paid the utimate sacrifice for freedom. But I am just a deeply moved by pride in their service to America and their devotion to duty. After more than two centuries of history, I can only wonder: where do we continue to get such men and women?

Paco, i ran across your blog site and am sorry to hear of your terrible loss. I can't even imagine the pain you and your wife are feeling, along with his fiance's stuggle being alone now. Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you and that he died for a noble cause of freedom. There were two Soldiers that died on 20March. Your son and SGT Paul Thomason. SGT Thomason was with my unit and I knew him. I thank you for your son's heroic life and service to our country. shawn- FOB Bernstein, Iraq

Francisco is to be honored: Washington, Franklin, and Jefferson deserve no higher honor than Francisco Martinez from this Country.
If Iraq suceeds in becoming a free country, he will deserve the highest honors as one of the people who made it possible.
I beleive that everything sacrificed in this life will be returned many fold in the next.

:(

Nothing is worth losing even one good person.

Unfortunately, only by putting good people in harm's way can we give hope to the oppressed.

I am humbled by one so willing to take the risk to do what he believes in.

I know nothing I could say could begin to make any sense of your loss and pain. I heard a commentary this afternoon about your son's loss.
My older son is currently in training, and I don't know if he will end up in harm's way or not. Your brave son, your family, and all our children and people are in my prayers and thoughts.

Though it is hard to see the good in a trajedy such as this. Knowing how hard Paco fought, what an amazing soldier he was, and how his memory will never be forgotten is not solice at this time. Though he was and is loved, is remembered and will always be. It will never ease the pain in your hearts.
May he rest in peace, and may God be with you at this hard time.
